When you are making plans for the year, do you forget (like I often do) to incorporate learning outside of the home? I do tend to skip this part initially, and then remember there is an abundance of learning to be had around us! And I’m not just talking about getting out into nature!

Even if you aren’t a homeschool family, these are all experiences that you can offer your children. Homeschoolers don’t have a corner on this market!

In today’s blog post I share 30+ general jumping off points in four main categories: nature, the arts, science, and history. Use these ideas to search in your own cities and states to begin to create your own master lists! You can add to it along the way, and start to fill in days on the calendar to take advantage of these great assets in your own areas!

If you are a fan of wonderfully curated booklists, then this compilation of over 200 books in over 24 subject areas just might be a book you want to own! A book about books! Who doesn’t love that?

Elizabeth Wilson personally read each book and provides fairly detailed comments about each book “designed to give readers a clear idea of its tone and content”. I don’t like going in blind most of the time when selecting books for my kids to read, so I really appreciate insight like this before making my picks.

The original publication was in 1987, and the updated publication is from 2002. The only reason I have given four stars to this review is due to the fact that more time has passed (22 years!) since the last update than the first (15 years). I know there are loads more books out there that could be added and some of them removed due to updates in the different fields represented.

Overall, this is a great book to add to your book curating collections along with other books in the same vein. It’s always handy to have a resource like this when searching for new, used, and borrowed books!

I had the privilege of getting some time to chat with Bibi of @314sqft today and it was lovely. Bibi is a mother to four aged 11, 9, 7, and 3 and RVs full time with her husband! I just love living vicariously through her adventures. Ha!

Bibi enjoys slow, relaxed mornings with her children and also appreciates early time to herself to fill her cup first. I loved her advice about “closing the books, and taking a breather” when things seem overwhelming or when doubts start to creep in.

She has learned over the years that there will always be people who want to “quiz” your kids, but it’s more about them than it is about you and your children. Sometimes they are just genuinely curious how home education works and IF it works.

❤️ Bibi has also started a coaching service for women who want to thrive in their marriages and helps women to be the change they desire to be for their marriages. I love this mission and if this is something you are seeking, please reach out to her @wivesthrive.co.

Our family was gifted this super fun sensory and balance activity set from @outree recently, and the kids have been having fun experimenting with all the different ways you can utilize the pieces included.

Welcome back! Today I had the pleasure of talking with my friend, Evgeniia of @at.nourished.motherhood here on Instagram.

She’s a mama to a sweet, very active boy and also runs a business coaching mothers who want to take ownership of their health and well being.

I really loved what she had to say about the things she has learned while homeschooling and the things she has realized are the most important.

Evgeniia offers one-on-one health coaching, but it’s so much more than that. She wants moms to wake up with energy, capacity, and clarity while nourishing themselves well and making small changes each step of the way.

Embarrassingly, church history is not something I

Embarrassingly, church history is not something I personally have a depth of knowledge in. I have heard names and have a general understanding, but that’s about it when it comes to several of these brave men and women of God.

When I was planning our year this summer, I knew that I wanted to incorporate more history of our faith background into our school days. We already use the Christian Heroes Then & Now series, and my older two are reading through Foxe’s Book of Martyrs this year. However, for morning time (sometimes it’s not in the morning) when all the kids are gathered together, I needed something that my six-year-old in particular would be able to grasp (and have the attention span for).

Crossway Publishers (@crosswaybooks) has a few books centered on these Christian men and women and I selected the book Church History ABCs by Stephen J. Nichols and Ned Bustard.

This book includes a page for 26 heroes of faith all corresponding to a letter in the alphabet. (You can see a couple examples in the second photo.) It’s a brief overview, but gives us a jumping off point for further discussion and research. We have been adding in a YouTube video or additional read-aloud to give us further insight into the life of each person.

God, You Are Holy

God, You Are My Rock

The Psalms are full of beautiful character depictions of God. This sweet book written by William R. Osborne focuses on twenty “You Are” statements that assist children ages 4-8 (or thereabouts) in grasping the imagery in these specific passages.

These short readings would make an excellent addition to bedtime reading, but we have been including them as a part of our morning time selections. Each day is a different “You Are” statement followed by a scripture reference from the Psalms illustrating that character of God. The author then takes a few paragraphs to give real life examples and applications of these character traits along with an additional scripture reference. The reading ends with a very short, specific prayer idea centered on these applications.

The book’s 48 pages are beautifully illustrated by Brad Woodard, as each image helps to bring concepts like God as our hiding place, our King, our deliverer, and our fortress to life. There are an additional ten promises from the Psalms included at the back of the book for further study.

🌿 This would be a great addition to biblical studies for the early years as a part of a school day or as a sweet bedtime routine inclusion! Have you read this one with your family?
